My car was having problems. It, out of the blue, would not start. I would tap on the connector that plugs into the ignition module and it would start and be ok for weeks. Then all of a sudden i would have to tap it again. I was low on gas. The signal went off. I made it a short distance home. Then I forgot and drove about4 miles. The next morning I drovw 1 block and it went dead. I am sure i was out of gas. I have tapped on the connector. Nothing works. I cleaned the connector. I have put $10. in gas. Still will not start. I think it may be the gas pressure. Some have told me the fuel pump burns up when out of gas. Others said no. I have got it to backfire once so I am sure gas and spark are there. My son says he can see spark.
If I can get the pressure up and have my son tap it might start. Otherwise i will have to take it to the shop which is like Mayo Clinic.

the backfire was a lean misfire because you werent getting any fuel or very little, you might want to check the fuel filter because you just sucked everything out of the bottom of the tank. another problem could be the pre filter thats mounted to the bottom of the fuel pump could be clogged. the type of vehicle would also help

If it is an older vehicle with a carerator you could pump the pedal and use some ether to get it started. If it is a newer model then what I have done when my wife has run our vehicle out of gas in the past is. Turn the key on wait 3 seconds turn it off then repeat the same process 3 more times. This should allow the pump to pump enough gas to the plugs to get the vehicle to start. Good luck

If its fuel injected, floor it until gas get up to the injectors, or if there is a pressure tester on the fuel rail have someone crank it and push the button on it until it starts spraying, if its got a carb, pour a LITTLE bit of gas in the carb until it wants to run on its own. If you icm is bad, (ignition control module), if its finally kicked the bucket you will need to get another, they may cause a spark every now and then even when they are bad.

I have heard the same thing about running out of gas several times. It might be be the fuel pump. Because you are putting a load on the fuel pump to make it do its work.

well, it could be a fuel pump has went bad, it could be a starter that went bad, you could have a bad connection with the starter or the fuel pump, but, if it is fuel injected, it would have to be a pump. If it has a carberator, then you can put just a lil bit of fuel down in it and try to start it that way. good luck, be careful about doing that though, my dad about burned up his mustang motor b/c it caught on fire! =-p

Try putting a little gas into the carburetor or throttle body not alot or you will flood it it may be you have a bad fuel filter try changing it and see if that helps

Maybe you didn't tap it hard enough, get a hammer and try again.
