Ok guys for some reason when ever my tank is almost empty the gauge says its almost full or it changes from time to time. Like one time when we were almost empty it said we had a full tank about three seconds later it started dinging. I have a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT. This isnt a problem im really worried about b/c i usually keep the tank full. Im just wondering why it does this. How exaclty does a gas tank tell how much gas is in there? Thanks!

The fuel level sending unit is most likely bad, it is a lever with a float on it that works like a volume control on a radio. When they start to wear out they get bad spots where the gage loses contact causing the reading to be off. The sender is in the tanks but they are not to hard to replace. Below is a GM TSB that covers this issue.
