I will be attending an event where I will be ballroom dancing. The dress I have purchased has a train and I need to get ideas on how to alter the dress just for the dances, but then have it normal for the rest of the night. I've looked into bustles, but i need more ideas on what would look good.

I'd say just pin it up around the hem with safety pins, such that the length is even everywhere. Put a lot of small safety pins. You don't want your heel get caught in the dress. Depending on the fabric of the dress it might or might not be a good idea. It really is hard.

How long is the train?
You could remove it, cut a small piece from the end to use in creating a false placket across the back of the dress where it originally attached and put little buttons, snaps, hooks or even a small separating zipper under the placket and across the top-end of the train so when you are not dancing you could re-attach the train.
OR If the train is not too long you could leave it on the dress and fasten a small elastic or ribbon loop to the underside at the end. Then when you want to dance you simply pick up the train and put the loop around your wrist. You can create some interesting flourishes with that train attached to your hand this way and still have both hands free for whatever! :-)

Since you do not want to alter the original dress. You should find another material...from a dress you already have that you can cut up...or buy it. It should not match the dress, but should be a subtle different shade of a soft flowing fabric that drapes well without fold.
Carefully run a thread through one end of the material and gather it. Pin or sew this to the shoulder of the original dress.
Drape the material till it suits your needs and pin or sew at the site that keeps this drape as you like it...such as at the waste or the second shoulder and the waist. Let the material drape just two inches past the bottom of the original dress and the hem it. Hem all raw edges. Fasten a broach or a fancy pin at the shoulder or waist and stand back to see if it is what you like.
Start early in case you change your mind.

There is a stitch that is used on formal wear rentals in order to alter the length many times without damaging the garment. Its called a blind stitch. The great thing about this stitch is that it is only seen on the underside of the garment, and when you remove it, it can be unraveled in one quick motion. You might be able to contact a local tailor and inquire if they can do it or not. I hope that helps!
