We have plans to eat dinner with her dad tonight, but I was invited to go to happy hour with some co-workers. How do I get out of going to eat dinner with my father-in-law?

I am not trying to blow my wife and father-in-law off, but we just had dinner with him that last two weekends in a row.
My pic is a chick, because that is the way I roll!!

There is no way to weasel out without looking bad, sorry.
Edited to add: Can you bring them to happy hour with you?

I would go with the wife, you had already made plans before the happy hour thing came up, right?
Maybe you could look at it this way:
You ask a special girl out to the prom, she accepts, you're all hyped up about it and have been looking forward to it, and then she calls you at the last minute and says she's going with someone else because she got a better offer.
Get the picture?
It's much easier to go with the original plan than to have to "make nice" for the next 6 months for diving out on your wife and father in law.
Hope this helps.......!!!

You don't. You had already made plans with your wife and father-in-law so you should keep your word. Happy Hour is everyday of the week, but if you want the respect of them, tell your co-workers you won't be making it this time

Wife? Right..... Well anyway, providing this is a real question and not something for kicks. I would say to suck it up and have dinner with the man as you have already agreed to the plans. You could get drunk anytime with the coworkers. Try not agreeing with the plan next time, then do as you wish. Backing out now would not only make you seem undependable, but if they found out that you went drinking instead, would make you look even lower.

How sad you are. You already had plans to go to dinner with your father in law. You can go out drinking anytime! Man I would be pissed if you canceled on me for happy hour with your co-workers! This is your WIFE! I expect that she would be mad too or you wouldn't be asking this question here. GROW UP!

It depends which plan came first. If you have already made a plan with someone, then it is rude to cancel because something else crops up, but if you had already arranged to go to the happy hour and your wife made other arrangements without your realising, then you should just appologise to her father, explain you had already made plans and that you will be happy to go for a meal with him the next time. Of course it might be best to run this by your wife first, but if she is reasonable she should see that it's fair.

Have a cocktail after work with the co-workers and then head to the restaurant to meet your wife for dinner.
VERY unkewl to blow off already made plans for nothing more serious than happy hour...would you want to be treated that way?

I am a little confused cause that looks like a girl in your avatar, and I hoep you are not using your wife's account!
You should go to the dinner, show your wife how much you value her dad....it really does count. Brushing him off is something she will remember for a LONG LONG time. I mean come on, happy hour? Not worth it!

if u want to make your wife happy go to dinner with her dad, you can go to happy hour anytime with the co workers. your wife's feelings should mean more to u than the coworkers. if the coworkers are more important than your wife, theres a problem u need to look at.

If I were you, I'd tell the truth. Better yet, I'd skip happy hour and have dinner with your wife and father in law. They are more important.

Is this happy-hour with your co-workers mandatory for your job? If not, then suck it up and eat with your father-in-law. It will make your wife happy.
