If Barry Bonds said "I have my reasons" (which we would all know they are) "but I have chosen to retire and leave the record where it is." Do you think that people would respect him for doing so and see him more positively than they would if he broke the home run record?

If he was really smart he could save himself and hang Selig at the same time by doing the greatest mea culpa in the history of sport.
Let him call a press conference w/ Selig and Aaron in attendance
Bonds look over at Aaron and says "Hank I respect you and the game too much to continue this quest, therefore I am retiring leaving you with your record intact"
Looks over at Selig , tosses him a baseball and says "Bud this is the world that you and your marketing geeks wanted when you changed the game. By doing steroids I and many other players simply obeyed your wishes . It's now your game , do what you will with it .I'm outta here "
Bang ! In one fell swoop Bonds' changes the way a lot of people feel about him

Undoubtedly so.... but myself i would be furious... i want him to break that record... because as a pirates fan, baseball has become boring, the only exciting thing in the last 10 years was the red sox beating the yankees in the playoffs... and now every time he steps up to bat my heart stops..... but for all the fans that hate him, most likely the better percentage of them would respect him a bit more after that

I fell that he should. I have wished for him to get a career ending injury before he breaks it but that will not happen. If there is anyway for him to be respected (well besides Giants fans) then that would be the way to do it. Other than that I feel he is a greedy self indulged person with no morals.

No... Barry has done too many things throughout his career to disrespect the game of baseball and it's fans. He deserves no respect for anything he has ever accomplished.

I think I would gain a VERY small bit of respect for him if he
1)apologized for his behavior. He wouldn't even have to say steroids.
2)retired today.
3)started doing public service announcements about the dangers of steroids.
-of course a small donation to myself wouldn't hurt. :) LOL

Probably not, he may sway a few people, but really, it's just a #, let him break it and get it over with and we can cut down this section by about 400 questions a day

Not only is is not going to happen, people that go through their lives hating are not going to change no matter what Bonds does.

as far as the steroid-user:no they would not forgive him, he shouldnt even be at 754-or 654, or maybe even 554...

but as far as a man:yes, or at least i would think of him better.

He doesnt play baseball he plays home run derby-he hits mostly ground balls and doesnt run out any of them-not even the ones he can possibly beat out!
