Maturity is required to vote because of the complex nature of our country's problems and the importance of choosing the right person to address those problems. The fact is that 99% of children don't know enough about what is happening in this country on specific issues or what is happening in the world beyond the headlines. It's not really anything to think about. Children are minors and under their parents control for a very good reason. They are still developing and learning the ways of the world. That is why their parents do the voting and take their children's welfare into consideration when they do. It is their job to protect their children, and make the difficult decisions, and that includes voting.
But your interest in politics is a very good thing! Stay informed and learn all you can and when you are old enough to vote you will be doing so as a well informed American who is mature enough to employ critical thinking.

You pose a very good question. I will try to be honest and fair, yes maybe something I say might make you think "the truth hurts", thats what it will be about.
Kids need education and need to know politics, which isn't taught in schools. Most kids know nothing about politicians, diplomacy, wars, threats to our country. Kids cannot comprehend these things, have no right to vote due to these reasons. Since kids cannot drink and smoke legally at an early age, they cannot vote either.
It's Common sense, something you should think about.
Feel free to establish a connection with me, if i am wrong, please tell me in a kind way why my thinking is not good to you. I believe I said the right thing and everyone in the public forum agree with me. It's a simple philosophy, if u can call it that, or an ideology, whatever.

Looking at the decisions I made 10 years ago sure reaffirms that I was not mature enough to make sound choices. I think that 18 is a good starting point in adulthood. But, most of us don't grow up until our 30's!

Because most kids are ignorant, immature, and naive. They do not have enough experience or knowledge to make informed decisions, or even the will to inform themselves. They often fail to take into account the side effects or feasibility of ideas. They fail to ask the next question which is "Where did you get your information".
Unfortunately, many grow up to be adults of the same caliber.

I'd say that if the few smart kids here were allowed to vote, the dumb ones would, too. Kids are unaware of politics and what is happening in the world... or even this country. And no, I don't believe this is kids' country, too as the kids didn't fight in the war to free this country, to free slaves or do ANYTHING to massively impact this country.

yes, you DO need to be mature to vote. kids arent always mature enough to know whats going on, kids are kids. they live in their own world. politics are pretty complex and boring for the average kid.
what a dumb question!!!
i know if i had voted when i was 11 years old, i wouldnt have even known what was good or bad for our country... most of my friends(even ME) back then only liked the popular candidates that everybody mentioned, regardless of what position or thoughts they held. i vividly remember...Al Gore was the most popular at the time. and, i was too busy being a kid to care about politics.
Of course, that not my reality anymore. i will be 18 in 2008 and i know who i will vote for from my own personal decision and what i feel is best for our country.

Because they have a limited knowledge base, and the decisions we are making by voting for a candidate are deserving of someone who is fully mature and hopefully more knowledgeable than a child.

Have you even read some of the posts by kids on this board? They don't know their butt from a hole in the ground when it comes to politics.

Imo, some kids are a lot smarter than some adults, therefore, I think kids should be able to vote, after all, this is their country too.
