You can also travel by bus, same as the greyhound system in America, but less popular.

This is the site for the UK, but the system works all around Europe.
I have never done it myself, I prefer the train.
And for longer distances air travel.
With the cheap tickets nowadays you can get real good deals on most connections, but you will have to book far in advance.
Google for cheap flights if you want to see what that would cost.

Most motorcoach travel in Europe is part of a tour program of some sort. The reason is simple: Trains. That's the way to go between the cities you've listed. It's faster, more comfortable and relaxing, and generally cheaper. Plus, you'll see nicer scenery. Get yourself some info about Eurail tickets that allow you to travel on any country's train system for one price. The tickets are worth it and a sure fire way to save some cash, especially since the Dollar is weak against the Euro right now.

Most posts above have said it - the train is a better deal than the bus.
That said, most people on the Paris-Geneva route also see plane travel as a good alternative. With the cheap airlines available these days, you could probably get a flight to Geneva for less than the train...

Yes, you can travel throughout Europe by coach, using Eurolines' services. This company has a wide network, and its fares are very competitive.
Nevertheless, traveling in coach is annoying: you get tired very quickly and comfort is non existent.
I would recommend you to get a Rail pass. This can be purchased at Paris' train station.
The train pass is more expensive than the Eurolines Pass, about 25/30% more expensive.

I've done it by train. They are the only way to travel in Europe! Look at the website for the Eurrail pass and see which one best suits your needs (they come in lots of "sizes", # of days of traveling, # countries visiting, etc...) They seem pricey at first, but it really is very, very convenient AND you don't have to worry about renting a car! HAVE FUN!!

Rath is right - Eurail is the way to go. The European rail system is FANTASTIC and milllions of years ahead of the US.
You can get trains between every major city and even many smaller ones (with transfers).
A great way to save money on lodging is to grab overnight trains between cities.
