I know she shouldn't have given her bank details but I can't really see what anyone can do with an account number and sort code....my bank is very secure and asks me loads of security questions for all transactions so just what do people do with these details?

If you are in the UK it is most likely a legitimate canvasser. Charities do this all the time and they usually outsource the canvassing to registered companies that are governed by legislation. It is quite common, the canvassers often get dropped of by a bus and buzz round a whole area in the space of a day. They usually have ID photo cards, and leave a carbon copy of the direct debit mandate, and there is always full contact details including address/ phone no etc and you have the opportunity to cancel the DD at any point, even before a 1st collection.

It would be rather drastic to cancel your bank account going by the info you gave in your question. All that said there is no harm in being careful. If all the above mentioned applied when your wife had the canvasser round then it should be fine and can be easily cancelled if required. If this was not the case and you have not been left valid contact info then certainly it would be worthwhile taking a few precautions.

Duh...has she ever heard of identity theft?
You will be surprised what a bank account number can produce about you. People will go through your garbage or steal your mail just to gain a piece of information about you. All they need is one thing and BOOM, they can steal your identity. If I was you I would close that account and open another checking account. I know it may cause an inconvenience but in the long run it will save you from an identity theft headache. You might think the bank account info is insignificant but think about it. Do you ever get scam emails saying you have won a lotto in another country. Those emails want you to send your full name, sex, marital status and address. They can steal your identity with this little info. Even your personal email address can tell a hacker a lot about you on the internet. I use to work for a bank. Personal information is not as confidential as you think. Trust me! So just be safe instead of sorry. Cancel that account and the card linked to it and open another.

There are a number of ways to use the details, theres no debate about that.

You MUST ring the bank NOW and tell them. If you don't and your account is emptied, then you will lose this money and won't be able to get it back. If you tell the bank, and money is taken the bank will be liable (although you are ususally liable for the first £50).

If you don't inform the bank, it could be a very expensive mistake!

But it is very easy for people to clone cards. They only need an account number and sort code and they can wipe out your account. You should go to the bank as soon as possible and make sure everything is ok.

Cancel the bank account now.

These details are used to verify identity. Therefore, while he may not use your account, he could EASILY open a credit card in her name. Call the bank, tell them what happened, and cut the account.

oh, my ... let's just suppose that her signature is forged to an authorization for 10 or 100 times the amount she's expecting.

with banks not inspecting signatures these days, it would sail right on by until you get your statement 3 weeks later .. good bye money!

suggest you call bank and change account number immediately
