The best player that is playing currently is probably Sidney Crosby. He is only going into his 3rd year in the NHL and is making $9 million + a year for the next 5 years. He has back to back 100+ point seasons, and has turned a franchise completely around. Without a doubt he is the greatest player currently playing.
Now the best player ever (ironically was on the same team as Crosby) was Mario Lemieux. He was forced to retire and return a few times because of cancer and recorded 690 goals. He would have been probably the greatest goal scorer in NHL history if it wasnt for cancer.

Offene - Sid the Kid by a long shot and only his 3rd year in the NHL. Like some other people said he will only get better and if he would stop his wining all the time he would even be better.
Defense - Nicklas Lidstrom by a long shot again. He plays on one of the best teams in the league. 4 or 5 norris trophies na dhealthy all the time.
Goalie - Martin Brodeur.

there is lots of "good" nhl player, Jason Spezza, Danny Heatly, Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, and Joe Thorton are the top forwards.
The best defence are : Dion Phaneuf, Zedano Chara, Wade Redden, Niklas Lidstrom, and SCOTT NIEDERMAYER.
