Hi. Yes to all questions. Heat build up should not be a problem if you don't block the vent holes. Set your power management to spin down the external drive after a period of time, such as 1 hour.

If your thinking high velocity of information then maybe a firewire casing would work better but USB 2.0 works fine.
Yes you can run it for long periods of time but it does heat up so external casing must have a fan (firewire casing have fans) or just keep it in a cool room lots of ventilation.
yes you can install programs on the external..but not advisable slower speed and heat will be your main problems.
Yes you can capture TV just set your capture folder to external disk folder 'Captured TV'.

Remember hard drives do fail so always backup your movies, documents, pictures, videos onto dvd disks.

Good luck

I have a guide that I have written that has gotten a lot of acclaim perhaps you should check it out it explains all of this in great detail.

I leave my 2 320 GB's running almost constantly but there are rules. Also please note that the warranty on external drives are much lower then the warranty on a internal drive so it may be a better idea to buy an enclosure and a drive then to buy one that is already preassembled.
