This is a sleep where you are at a level different than what you are used to- this happened to me as well, someone told me it was the devil toying with me (this person was born again Christian and acted like I was in Great danger, prayed for me" I remember not being able to even move my lips, I couldnt feel my body, and though my brain was fully away, I think the cells must not have worken the rest of my body at that point. I was so scared and when I finally gave up trying to move, I sat up with my heart racing and felt winded.
It is the most scariest feeling- I have only had this once in my life, and actually now that I am thinking about it, I was on the couch at the time when I lived at home, and I was on my stomach.
I just think this is really something to do with the brain not telling the body to wake up.
My mother has Parkinson's and I see her struggle to move, feet just freeze in place and she cannot get her one foot to go in front of the other- it is the brain not telling the feet to move. Deterioration of the cells-
Not that you have deterioration, it is just that you are in such a relaxed state of sleep that when you wake, your body is still in that state but your mind is wide awake and alert. The mind is a very powerful tool and most of us never even consider how our brains really are or work- If you saw my mother, you would see how genious the brain truly is-
You may want to avoid any alchohol, or food 3-4 hours prior to going to sleep. See if this helps you in any way.

World reknowned psychic Sylvia Browne’s chapter on Astral Catalepsy: Temporary Paralysis And Loud Noises While We Sleep is highly informative. It is likely that many readers have experienced this themselves or have observed it in family members. When it’s not understood, it can be frightening. “Astral catalepsy” or “sleep paralysis” is the sleeper’s perception, while asleep or when half-waking that they can’t breathe, can’t move, can’t open their eyes or that some force is pinning them to the bed.” They may even call for “help!” Others experience a deafening noise. In any of these cases, the people who experience this can feel real terror and even imagine that they are dying or are being attacked.
It is certainly helpful and comforting to learn from Browne that this is a common occurrence for both children and adults. This “sleep paralysis,” according to Browne, is always associated with astral trips. She explains the cause: “On the rare occasions when the conscious mind ‘catches’ the spirit leaving or reentering the body, it panics, in the semiconscious belief that if the spirit is half in and half out, the body must be dying and literally unable to function.” It’s a kind of “temporary mental and neurological short circuit.” In any case, Browne assures readers that while the experience is upsetting, it is “neither permanent nor life-threatening.” She also includes some steps to do before sleep and a prayer to use for peaceful exiting and reentering the body during sleep.

It is called sleep paralysis and, in your case, may be caused from pressure at the base of the brain or some other uncomfortable thing that may be happening with your cardiorespiratory functions from the position that you are sleeping in. Try sleeping on your right side (not the left. Avoid putting pressure on your heart).
Some people think they are experiencing a supernatural phenomenon. However, sleep paralysis is a common sleep disorder whereby part of the mind is waking while the body is still asleep and immobile. Feelings of panic and paranoia and sensations accompanied by lucid dreaming or waking-dreaming (basically, hallucinations) occur that create a scenario for the panic and crushing sensations.
Often, the sleeper begins to dream that he's woken up in bed and is being crushed by some evil entity (or a space alien). Upon realizing he might really be dreaming, he has trouble waking up because his mind is trying to awaken and move the body. The body remains "paralyzed" for a short time because the chemicals in the brain that keep a person from moving around while sleeping (that is, that keep him from acting out his dreams as if he were awake), have not "kicked in" yet. In other words, things in the brain that control dreaming, waking, and muscle control and responses aren't working in synch.
Even though it is a very uncomfortable experience, it is harmless and is not a sign of disease; it's just a common disordered sleep phenomenon. It usually begins in adolescence and becomes less frequent as one ages.

It could be several things. Suspended animation will cause those types of feelings. It's a freaky phenomena, being somewhere between a sleeping/waking state. It's often terrifying for some. It could be that you are astral projecting, and you are awakening at the point that you are coming back into your body. Also a disconcerting feeling.

The Old Hag Syndrome...It's scary, I get it all the time...Once I dreamt I was in a car and the car went off the road into a lake and I couldn't move or anything, another time I was in an Attic with a shadowy figure standing above me, I couldn't more or talk, and could barely breathe....Pretty scary...

You are experiencing sleep paralysis (SP) I get this too. I get the feeling that someone is there with me, who is evil. I cann;t move or speak but I am definately awake. Some people have out of body experiences (OOB) following SP. I have. Next time you have this happen to you, my advise is to reassure yourself that it won't last long, and that the scary feelings are imagined. This link will explain more:

Hmm, looks like you got a demonic presence going on.
Demons have strange ways of manifesting.
IF this is the case. you should seek guidance from a spiritual leader. Like a priest.
