I'm looking for a new laptop for school and I'm pretty much leaning towards an HP right now, possibly a dell. I need some expertise here--I want something that has long battery life, is fairly light, and of course, sleek-looking. I don't want one of the humongo widescreens or anything, just something simple and easy to carry around.

Allygirl, u don't say if it's 4 HS or College? If it's college, they usually have tech support people on campus... which my DD found 2 be so helpful. Lots of info, most w/help u decide depending on ur major. Engineering usually need more mem than other fields. Can't stress enough memory and fast driver cause most campus have wifi, ethernet access need fast processor.

Most colleges offer good software bundles 2 their students at reasonable cost vs. u going on own buying. Some offer special discounts 2 purchase laptop, computer system with your school special discounts... might even work out deal in financial aid package for all Freshman college students. All laptops usually carried in bookbag or special laptop case so I wouldn't be so don't want widescreen...

DD didn't want widescreen but now she is so glad 4 it. She can do reports, play lots of music w/graphics, watch dvd movies ... she bought a Toshiba w/ all the whistles & bells. She connects surround sound and she's in heaven. Walmart online u can buy & get great service plan all online and have it delivered 2 ur local Walmart in the town where u go 2 college. Other vendors will do same. Good luck.

What meets your needs is a MacBook. Go to www.consumerreports.com, chcek out the last issue. The MacBook gets the top ratings for battery life, and tech support. and you won't be battling with viruses or malware. They are light and look great.

Go for HP. Never a dell. Dell's usually need servicing as early as a year or 2.

Try this:

laptops can vary so much. i personally like acer they make good laptops at good prices. things to look for are
Good hard drive space. atlest 1gb ram if possable and DVD burner.
Dual core is always nice but that will put hte price up.

Most laptops now have wireless networks built in so keep an eye out for that to (also called Wifi)
