Depends, some people are brought up with manners.
While some were told to be professional no matter what so it's part of their personality.
It's always better to be "polite" thn rude.
You can sense if it's fake/real via the body language & the tone of the voice.

they are either really really nervous and dont know what to say, or they are sucking up for some reason.
I usually put space between me and an overly complimentary person till they get a grip and can hold a real conversation. is that mean?

They could be very fake, or just someone looking for approval.
Sometimes, though, the person could just one of the few genuine people with a good heart:)

With a touch of perception, you can see whether they are fake or not. Some are, some are genuinely sweet.
