Because their ego is so warped that they refuse to discuss whatever your choice of topic at hand. Right off the bat they feel so much superior in the legend of their own mind that they'd rather humiliate you ruthlessly, than be civil and discuss!
Next time, either avoid argumentation or debate with this impatient egoist, or simply tell them, I may be, according to you, BUT, were you ever even allowed to enter kindergarten?
You know what . . avoid this person, its a no win situation.
There are many other people who'd be discreet and civil during a discussion, a debate, an exchange of viewpoints.
To answer you in such a way, as you state, is meant to cause shock, humiliation and belittling. In oder words IT IS verbal abuse disguised as superiority.
