It has to do with the option bonus which is paid out in the second year. Also he is waiting for Calvin Johnson to sign his contract which he just did so he can make sure and get more money than the #2 pick.

From what I'm hearing, the issue is not money, but an option bonus. Apparently, Russell wants an option bonus which makes it more difficult for the Raiders to void the contract if he gets in trouble (especially with the law).

The Raiders are not backing down, while Russell's agents wants money protection in the future. I think Russell will look bad in the public eye, because of the negative publicity of Vick and Pacman Jones. Should a team pay a player who breaks the law???

"Davis said Russell's agents, Eric Metz and Ethan Lock, want most of the money to be paid out in an option bonus, which is difficult for the team to recoup if a player violates his contract in the future. Davis said the team wants protection if Russell decides to hold out or feud with the team in the future."

Look am a Raiders here to tell you the reason Russell is holding is about the bonus money up front that the team and his agent couldn't agree on. Russell won at least $30 million dollars in signing bonus but the team is not willing to give him that much in signing bonus up-front.

Guaranteed money...the same reason every player holds out. But, out of all positions to not be in camp for, QB is the one that is affected the most. Russell is only hurting himself by doing this. The longer the holdout goes, the farther on the depth chart he will end up.

Is that a serious question? Why does anyone hold out. he wants more money to play on a team that is expected to be decently better than last year; however, in the AFC West, they stand next to zero chance of making any noise. Also, with the signing of Daunte Culpepper, I'm interested to see where this holdout goes.

Can you say primadonna. He thinks that he's worth more than last years #1 pick. I feel that there should be a set contract for all rookies, regardless of where they get drafted. Then after they prove they're NFL worthy, they can demand more money. That way when 1st rounders bust, the team that drafted them doesn't lose as much cap room.

Greed, plain and simple. What else could it be. I say trade his greey butt to some other team for a decent QB, next years 1st round pick, and some offensive line help.
Come on Raiders! We the Raider Nation are still hanging in there.

Simple: Money and the Raiders are sending so many different people to try and negotiate that the different deals are getting screwed up. They are just doing a shotty job at doing this whole thing.

He wants to get as much guaranteed money as he can. Then when he gets on the field and shows everybody that he is not an NFL caliber starting QB he can take the money and run.

He doesn't like the contract proposals being offered to him, he thinks he deserves more than last year's first pick (Mario Williams, Houston Texans) and i think he deserves it too but he needs to get into camp and compete for that starting job with Daunte Culpepper
