In ancient times up to the 'Dark Ages' people believed that seeing an owl of any color, but especially white, during the day was a bad omen. It meant death or injury. Depending on which part of the European world you were in, just the sound of an owl's call during the day (particularly early afternoon) meant that somebody was going to die. Somebody in the area (supposed to be within earshot of the owls call, whether they hear it or not).
The owl thing is just a superstition, although most superstitions are based on a little truth. This one is more like an urban legend that's been around for thousands of years.
