I have recently come up with a theory as to how astrology affects us. First of all, astrology can be the most grounded of all sciences as it is based on our universe and planets..i mean how much more grounded can you get?

What my theory is that: astrology is basically how the position of planets affect our mood and events surrounding us. each planet has a gravitational pull- some sort of magnetic power. Our brains have neurons, which also have electric charge and my theory was that depending on the position of the planets, our brains/neurons feel the pull of their gravity/magnetic power.

What do you guys think? I mean I was not able to write it very clearly, but that is the gist of it.

Thanks!

hey to all you jackasses who think they are the **** when they answer questions, stop sucking your own ****. when people ask questions here, it is usually for approval. and just because you 'THINK' that it won't work becaseu of your own judgements doesn't mean that i won't.

thanks a lot to those who answered with an open mind.

The gravitational force of people passing you on the sidewalk is stronger than the gravitational force you feel from the planet Jupiter. It's much more massive than a person, but it's also very much farther away, and the inverse square law all but erases its gravitational influence at such a distance.

The magnetic fields of the various planets are absolutely swamped by the magnetic fields of the earth and sun (as measured on the surface of the earth).

Edit: Lithium Deuteride is right about Jupiter's gravity. I was quoting Carl Sagan and never bothered to check his figures.

Sorry, but others have proposed this idea and it has been thoroughly debunked--probably before you were born. With the exception of the moon and sun, celestial gravitational influences are essentially immeasurable against the gravitational influences of local objects, buildings, people, cars, etc. The gravity alone is of no value but the tidal effect is something to consider. The moon has a tidal effect on us, but it is distributed over only the height of the person instead of the 6900 miles of the earth. Again, it would be so small as to have less impact than an airplane flying overhead. And then there's the problem that all of these celestial objects traverse the circle of the sky every day, constantly changing their orientation to us.

I could go on all day explaining why there are no decent physical bases for astrology but all of that argument is superfluous. Astrology doesn't work. It never has. In all properly conducted tests, it has failed miserably. Every time. So the point is this: there is no need to discuss why astrology *can't* work when it simply *doesn't* work. That's all that matters.

First of all, this is the science and math section, not the pseudoscience and hocus-pocus section. Second, what you have is not a theory, but merely a hypothesis. You should learn and know the difference. Third, many planets have no magnetic field at all, and their gravitational pull at their remote distance from us is less than that of a person standing next to you, or even across the room from you, so astrology is absolute bunk right from the get-go.
If you are curious about how the universe works, try learning some real science. It's a bit more difficult than the hocus-pocus, but it has the advantage of actually working.

If that were the case, you would expect that the behavior of a person would be affected by the current position of the planets only. There would be no reason to expect that the position of the planets at our birth, or the month in which we are born, would also play a role.

I might also add that most astrological predictions are written so vaguely as to be applicable to anyone. They seem accurate because we expect them to, and our minds automatically fit them to our own situations. It's one reason why most people who truly do not believe in astrology find it difficult to begin believing.

Is it any coincidence that at least half of the word "astrology" can also be found in the word "psychology"?

At any rate, there are theories which suggest that magnetic fields can affect the human mind. These concepts attempt to explain why many people tend to act strangely during solar flares and related events.

The gravitational field due to Jupiter at its closest pass to Earth is about 3.66*10^(-7) m/s^2. The gravitational field due to a 60-kilogram human passing within half a meter of you is 1.60*10^(-8) m/s^2.

So, Jupiter pulls on you about 22 times harder than the guy standing next to you does. Needless to say, this is utterly insignificant.

As for the magnetic theory, there is nothing, I repeat, nothing ferromagnetic in the human body. Nobody has ever demonstrated any effect of magnet fields on the human body, positive, negative, mood-changing, or otherwise.

Furthermore, astrology also says that the positions of the stars affect someone's personality. Let's think about that. Most of the stars we see in so-called "constellations" (which don't really exist) are hundreds or thousands of light-years away. That means any information from the stars takes hundreds or thousands of years to reach us, traveling at the speed of light. In order for the information to reach Earth and somehow affect a newborn child, it must have been sent hundreds or thousands of years in advanced, before the child's parents even met. In short, the stars would have to be predicting the future.

Utterly absurd.

Astronomy is a science.

Astrology is a bunch of hogwash. Try your theory on the astrology nuts. Not on the Astronomy site.
