I love all the Frank McCourt books, Angela's Ashes, 'Tis, and I'm reading Teacher Man right now. They are sad, funny, insightful. I love the classic Catcher in the Rye. Also, anything you ever wanted to know about WWII you can read in the highly entertaining Winds of War and War and Rememberance. Terrific books.

If you like Harry Potter, look at these:
http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com
Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, and a short review of each book.
Another good source: http://www.interleaves.org/~rteeter/grtother.html#great . These are classics - and books become classics (usually) because they are so good. Check out especially the Harvard list. Another good thing about these is that almost all of them are free online.
I hope this helps.
