I am a graphic designer and I am starting my own website I want people to be able to purchase items off my site by selecting "buy" and then being able to see what is in their shopping cart and being able to pay by credit card.

I am designing the website with dreamweaver so how do I do this?

You will need access to PHP and MySQL on your hosting server. Go to http://www.hotscripts.com find your way to the PHP section, go to the Ecommerce listings and spend the weekend looking at the hundreds of free and commercial carts on offer. There are several great little carts there that will do the job nicely. There's no need to pay money. Many of the free carts are better than, or the same as commercial ones. Carts like OSCommerce and ZenCart are massive programs designed to handle thousands of items, others are designed to handle hundreds or just a few. You can even get Buy Now buttons that run as applets if you only have a couple of things to sell. I'm sorry I can't help you with recommendations. I could have once, but not any more. If you need advice on the final decision, contact me and I'll glance through the specs for you.

Oftentimes the easiest way to do this is to purchase a "shopping cart" from marketers of these products. They come in different capabilities and price ranges. Their value is that they do the obvious cart function of listing items in the cart but also cover the item list (a database), the payment processing, an acknowledgement, interface to the merchant bank, etc. More capable ones can list large numbers of items in large numbers of subcategories and even are able to be read in / read out of a separate external data base, into your financial or business management program, etc.

Often they can be easily integrated into your site, retaining the site structure.

I suggest you do a search for "shopping cart" and review what is available and what is suitable for you.

Whatever you do, do NOT use something called the "NOP Design Shopping Cart". It is a stupid piece of s--- that can be hacked in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately I have seen many amateur websites that use this.

I would recommend learning SQL, which can create stuff like databases that will help make a shopping cart.

I use http://www.LowPriceBuilder.com for few years. They only charge flat price, ($15 per month) ,and include Web hosting, Shopping Cart system, 30 more functions..... etc. This would be the most inexpensive way to have your e-commerce web site to go online. The builder allows you to create your web page easily without knowledge of coding or programming language.

A really great FREE solution is Mal's e-commerce at http://www.mals-e.com

The cart is highly customizable and interfaces with PayPal in case you don't have your own merchant account to take credit cards or don't want to pay the fees for one.

Set up a free account at Mal's and test it out. Pretty slick!
