The isolation of the Soviet Union was chosen by their leaders at the time. They had ideas and ideal that could or would be damaged if freedom of information was allowed. thus the walls went up. They were aggressive and wished to harm and own countries close to them. Even the Cuban missel crisis is evidence that they were not passive.
Resolving the cold war was eventually solved by the failure of the ideas and ideals of the leaders of the Soviet Union. The increase in the poor population exceeded the ability of the great experiment of communisim to balance its ideals with reality. More people became disgruntled, possibly, from seeing that only the leaders had wealth. But, hunger, cold and pure discomfort primed the nation for handouts from the countries that offered democracy to their own people. They started questioning there own government and looked toward more constructive measures to solve their problems. They looked into democracy even though it is not always the perfect government. The citizens no longer wanted to be treated like children without their own choices.
Interestingly enough, the greatest democratic government in the world was moving toward a new type of government called Commercialism. This is where large companies rule the government by hook or by crook. We are now seeing the division of the very rich from the very poor causing an imbalance of power that is eventually going to cause a backlash.
Although, the government of this rich nation is keeping the focus off of this problem by pointing to other nation's problems, this is now seen as a great problem by the population as a whole.
War kills the young, leaving this fragile nation with women and children and less strong men to fight for the democracy which is so needed to rebalance this nation.
Countries that keep setting into motion activities that drag the commercial nation into their wars actually weaken and deplete the poor of both nations while paying the rich companies who now run both countries.
Companies that moved to other countries to avoid the high tax plan of the new Commercial country are now seeing that they can work within other countries without a law that prevents them from price setting, without the laws that protect the workers, without the laws or constitution that actually allowed them to succeed so lavishly in their own country. Although, they ignore the lack of laws to protect the companies, they do so at their own peril. So removed are these companies from democracy that they they now see the poor as slaves and refuse to be concerned about unions that attempt to keep the equilibrium of our diminished and endangered democracy. Presidential priviledge has denied the priviledge of the carefully contructed constitution that was put in place to prevent a dictatorship.
The war powers act, used in the wrong hands with the wrong goals is the downfall of democracy. There will be a price to pay, but it will be the next seven generations that pay the price while they attempt to rebuild democracy in the world.
