HP laptops are great for general-purpose computing. They tend to use cheap integrated video which isn't good for gaming, and come pre-loaded with a bunch of bloatware (free trial versions of software and special offers) but once you clean that stuff off, they're fine.

I've got an HP Pavillion Laptop and I like it. It's no power house but it does everything I needed it to do. It has a DVD-RW drive, 15" screen, a remote control for using it to watch movies. Came with an extra battery, printer and laser mouse too. All for a very reasonable price.
As far as it compared to a VAIO, well Sony makes a great computer. Sony also puts a price tag on it's great stuff that lets you realise that you sometimes have to pay a bit more to get what you want. I don't see any advantage with a VAIO over an HP unless it can do something better. For the money an HP is probably going to deliver more. That's my opinion, though. Some may not agree.

I'm actually shopping for a new laptop right now. I currently own an hp pavilion (about 1.5 years old, so no longer under warranty), and I'm not even considering buying another one. it has a number of problems that are strictly hardware-related. I'll list them, in the order they appeared:
1) there are several bright spots on the screen, as if there are some wires pushing against it from behind.
2) the pads on the bottom came off, so it doesn't sit stably on my desk anymore (sure I can make some new pads and stick them on, but why can't the originals stick?)
3) the latch has become misaligned, so I almost have to pry it open.
4) when I put it in standby mode, it now sometimes wakes up as soon as I pick it up (even when the laptop is closed). this is incredibly annoying if I'm holding it, put it in standby, and then it wakes while I'm putting down.
5) this is the big one. it has recently started spontaneously freezing. I know this is a hardware issue, because when it happens, I can unfreeze it by pressing on a spot on the bottom of the computer. if I don't do it quick enough (for example if I'm away from my computer, I'll get the blue screen of death and the computer will restart itself.
so yeah, I don't know if sony is any better, but I'm definitely not happy with hp.
edit: #5 is a common problem. there was a class action lawsuit settlement that covered certain pavilion desktop models (the explanation was "defective motherboards"). see http://www.hppavilionsettlement.com/ . also do a google search for "hp laptop freezing" and look at the first few hits.

Well... HP laptops are not "bad" compared to Sony, but you usually get more bells and whistles on the Sony laptops.
But then, you are also paying a premium just to have a Sony.
Since there are so many different models of HP laptops out there, there are no real common issues that stand out with HP laptops.
The only common problem I have seen with them is the outer fascia of the LCD enclosure having a habit of cracking near the edges. But this is happens with most brands of laptop and is purely a cosmetic problem.

Nothing, although I will say sony vaio screens do tend to be the brigtest / crisp screens on the market. Hardware would make one model better then the other but as far as just the brand name there is no difference ultimately. Although people will say SONY RULES or HP IS AWESOME, it's just an oppinion.

No HP is the number one seller. Sony is having a problem with the battery on their CR line. People have a problem with their unit and think the brand is all bad.
