I have a 55 gallon aquarium with three rainbow sharks (about 3-4" each), five giant danios (around 3" each), one female beta (2"), a 6" long shark catfish, and a 6-7" long pleco. I need to trade the pleco out for a smaller one, and assuming I do, following the inch-of-fish-per-gallon formula, I figure I can add about 8-10" more fish to this set up. I was thinking a couple of angel fish might be nice - are their diets, tank/water requirements, etc., compatible with what I've already got, and would they be a good choice? I was also thinking of rosy red barbs, too - what do you think? The barbs or the angels, or something else entirely?

You have fish that will grow Big and some that will grow aggressive.

The shark/catfish will grow 39inches but are peacful.

The rainbow sharks grow 6inches and are semi-aggressive.

Even if you remove the pleco, Your tank is still overcrowded so remove the pleco and the shark/catfish and 1 rainbow shark then you can add get a King Tiger pleco that grows around 6inches and 6 or 8barbs.

The barbs needs to be in groups of 6 or more and are semi-aggressive and will attack or fin-nip other fish mainly the betta because its slow swim and longfins makes it a perfect target for barbs unless if they are in groups.

The cat shark will grow huge. You should take it back with the pleco. Get a bristlenose or rubber pleco. They will keep your glass clean and will stay 6" or less. The 1 inch of fish per gallon rule is straight B.S. You should be more concerned with fish that stay under 6" Angels will probably not appreciate all the fast swimming fish in the tank. I would stick with the barbs and other 6" or less adult fish.

Angel Fish deserve to be their own tank itself. They are cichlids which means they need special care and diet and plent of space. You 55 seems pretty full, but would suggest a few bottom feeders (catfish) Like a Spotted or Striped Raphel. I would keep your pleco for the size of your tank, but it will get larger.

If you trade in your pleco try to get a chinese cat fish. They are smaller and they clean up just as well as the pleco.

Forget the 1inch per 1 gallon, is totally BS, if that would be true you would be able to keep an oscar in a 10 gallon tank

Your pleco is fine as well, they require a minimum of 40 gallon

I think your setup sounds fine, I actually once had angels with rainbow sharks and they were absolutely fine with each other

Hope that helps
good luck

a couple of angel fish is not a good idea, with angels it is best to keep just 1 or a shoal of about 5

get the barbs because it will last longer cause the angel fish will have to hide from the shark.
