The way you have worded your question is logically challenging : it doesn't really ask about the pursuit of happiness - it asks about pursuing the pursuit of happiness, which means that, for some reason, a person is not actually able or willing to look for happiness, but is happy just to be trying to find the time or opportunity to pursue happiness. And if that is the case, a paradox arises, because the person already has happiness, as long as they believe the time or opportunity to look for it will come, yet they already have what they seek. So, the answer to the question is the first part of the question itself.

You answered you own question, it lies in the pursuit. Therefore, there is no reason to be rich, popular, or happy because once you are you won't have a need to pursue any thing else and you'll be unhappy again. That said this is how you become truly happy... Develop a way to become content with your life. This normally happens when you've realized how ungrateful you are for your free life and then decide to be grateful. So yeah, once your grateful you'll be happy.

Well, assuming that you're actually taking pleasure in pursuing happiness, then you really don't need to pursue happiness because you've already found it in the pursuit. But there lies the paradox, for if you discontinue your pursuit... you'll lose the happiness because the joy you found in the whole pursuit will be lost.

Happiness is a pleasure emotion. It’s a mild form of joy.
The ‘source’ of Happiness lies in the perception that you are achieving your desires.
It lies in the belief you are fulfilling your purpose.
For example:
Your biological purpose is to collect energy (food/money), reproduce, and protect yourself.
So if you’ve just gotten a really good job, and found the love of your life while training for your second degree black belt, you are probably pretty damn happy.
Most people pursue happiness by pursuing what they desire. But, you can also get there by changing your perceptions, or desires.
A physical workout is hard, but if you perceive it as moving toward a desirable body, the workout will make you happy.
If a mother wishes she could be dancing in Rio, her children make her unhappy.
But if she thinks it’s her purpose to have children, the reverse is true.
Here’s the odd truth. Humans are quite flexible. So it is not hard to adjust your actions, perceptions, and desires so you are always, or never, happy

Well since it's IN the happiness of pursuit and FOR the pursuit of happiness, then it must lie both within us and without us and lack within while containing more without depending on how much we already have of it.

Happiness is within the Absolute Truth. Also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, Rama etc. God our Creator is the source of all happiness and Pleasure that is why he is called Rama. If you want real happiness and are tired of floundering around suffering life after life within this material world then the recommended process is Bhakti yoga (Self realization) which culminates in the chanting of the Maha Mantra (The great mantra for deliverance fo all suffering and illusion) for info go to harekrishnatemple.com Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada- tell the process. asitis.com you can read it on line.
