eventually going to die anyway? I just don't buy into the belief that we will be rewarded for all our good deeds in an afterlife. That's just wishful thinking. Aren't we all just really waiting to die and be over with it?

On the scale of earthly time, individual lives are but mere blinks of an eye. We're born, we live, we die and then you're not heard from ever again. There might be a tombstone or family tree made with your name on it, but eventually the tombstone weathers from age and who knows what media your family tree will be used. All the memories and accomplishments will be totally forgotten, unless you're a Hitler or Alexander the Great type person. In a thousand years, your bones will be dust and no other trace of your existence will be seen, unless, of course you become fossilized for some reason, but even then, after thousands of years more, that will be disintegrated into dust. We influence the lives of our children and others, but they too will eventually die. So what's the point of living?

In astronomical terms, the Earth will eventually succumb to the supernova of our Sun, it's an astonomically certainty the earth will be burned to a crisp.

So does death render our lives meaningless. If we were immortal, that would be the ultimate in boredom, repetition, day after day, of doing the same thing for thousands of years (hundreds may be OK, but nothing beyond that)....but i digress, back to the meaning of our little lives.

It all boils down to how creative we can be in the short period of time we have on this earth....Our activities need to be worthwhile for their own sake, not because they fulfill some supernatural transcendental purpose....LIVE DAMNIT

We do good things to make the world a better place for the next generation. Think about it, if we go by the thought why bother we will die anyway what kind of place would this be? If earlier generations felt that way then eventually the world would be inhabitable. It does not matter if you believe in an afterlife or not, it really is to prolong the human species.

Ok, a far away answer. Maybe, we don't all die. Birth may just be a way of moving from planet to planet. Cheaper and easier than space travel. I agree that good or bad can be interpreted in so many ways. So, if we don't die, what afterlife? I know that if I do something I feel betrays my own ideals...I feel a negativity in my soul...and if I do things I feel lives up to my ideals, I feel a more calming nature. So, maybe the reward will be given by ourselves and our own infinite power. Who knows...just a thought for someone who thinks maybe his life does not matter. I think it does.

We will never really know that for sure. So far science can't prove that God doesn't exist and Christians can't prove that He does. That's why it's called faith. Christians just have to have faith that somebody will swoop down from the heavens and make everything all good again. Now maybe there isn't a God but maybe there's a different dimension or something that we transfer into when our physical body dies. We may never know because we may never be smart enough to figure it out. You just have to be happy with where you are in life... even if it all just leads to your death.

I also ask myself this question sometimes but rather than waiting to die i believe we're more trying to stay alive, i mean that is the reason we do practically everything we do is it not? The thing that sets us apart from other living things is our awareness of death but even though we all know death is inevitable we all want to stay alive dont we? Its something inside us that makes us want to survive. I dont claim to understand it but the human brain is a powerful thing, an amazing thing.Like it or not life matters to us, and if you think about it, who else do you want it to matter to(you obviously dont believe in god)Remember just as death is inevitable so is life and everything we do matters to someone that is why you should do good deeds, not to impress god, but to make life easier for everyone nobody wants to suffer not even you. dont live for the afterlife live for this life. i am only 17 and i dont claim to know it all but just try and live your life cos as far as we know this is our only shot at it

You need to get out more. You're question begs another question: what have you been doing all of your life? Is there anything that you enjoy? Is there anyone or anything that you love? This world needs thinkers, lovers, artists, inventors, healers, and caretakers, and many more folks who contribute in positive ways to make a difference. It sounds trite and corny, but with all of the evil bastards in the world getting the attention, why not join in with the rest of us who appreciate that our time here is limited and we have to make the most out of our collective existence? Get out more, live more, and then see if your question has any merit.

I believe in God and I live for Christ. God makes it all worth it. If the world wasn't important, then he wouldn't have sent his son Jesus Christ to die for us. That, alone is proof that someone thought we were worth dying for. I mean look at this awesome planet. We have a sun that help plants to produce photosynthesis. How did our bodies know how to digest food? We are a complex system. Come on, I'm not that smart, but some brilliant and awesome being sat there and created this whole world. I don't know about you, but I KNOW THAT I AM HERE FOR A REASON and living for God is worth being rewarding with everlasting life.

does the long run really matter that much to you. we arent here for the long run, we are here now; while we are here we might as well do what we can to make a better world. i think we should all, belief in an afterlife or not, live to make life better while we are here.

what a horrid perception.

Life is beautiful gift. .. it's what you make of it.

religious or not.

It's just like anything else. . .would you rather get out and enjoy the amusement park or be miserable that at the end of the day you have to go home???

WE MUST LIVE FOR TODAY. . .

WE MUST LIVE.

Your cynicysm suggests some deeply needed reflection of yourself. . . not other's answers.

Good luck.

Yeah dude. If that's what you want out of life. Sit there and wait to die. I can't argue with that.

Other people don't believe it and do good with the time they have. You are real right now. Get out and do something great. Just don't harm anyone else in your pursuits! :)
