so like everyone said: it stores your saved games, music, downloadable content from xbox live etc...
what they didn't tell you is if you want to play regular xbox games on your 360 you'll need a hard drive! The xbox 360 is only backwards compatible with regular xbox games if you have a hard drive and have downloaded the patch for it!

The hard drive is similar to a computers hard drive. Its the grey thing that clicks on the side end of the system. It stores game scores, game levels (you know when it says do "do not remove game or shut off system..." its saving. It also saves points, music, pics basically anything your xbox has in it that makes it yours and not just any system.

the hard drive is 20 gb, or actually 13 out of the box, but its supposed to be 20
the memory card is 64 meg or 512 if the new one is out yet,
that is probably big enough to save games,
but demos are about 800 meg each, and shows are around 400
movies are also big
if you wont need to download, go for a memory card 512, 64 is pretty small

its where all of ur data is saved and stored w/o it you would have to buy memory cards and they dont have alot of memory space on them but if u bought a core system u could get the hardware upgrade that came out when the elite came out

if you do not have a hard drive, then you cannot save.. so if you are in the middle of a game and have to go do something else, you cant save it and then come back to it..
