In the early days of telephony there was a chance of getting whacked by the AC ringing current. The wires were wrapped in cloth. However, if you are doing the ringing, you are not actually on the same time line as the person being rung. What you hear as a ring is sent to you from you central office. The actual voltage sent to the bell at the other end has no "ringing" sound that reaches you. Therefore you hear a pause but it could be a ring at the other end.

I asked a lot of people about this and got the following answers: 1) "I dunno. Never thought of that!" go figure, 2) "I don't want the caller to hear the ringing when I puck up." What? That's crazy. The caller can't hear the ring unless you have multiple phone in the same room, 3) "I like to let it ring three times before I answer." This last answer was the most common one.

I like to let my phone ring 3 times before I answer. I do it so that I can check the caller ID, decided whether or not I want to talk to that person, and not seem desperate to talk on the phone by answering on the first ring. I really had to think about that before I answered it, lol. This was an interesting question. Thanks! lol

I don't wait for a pause, but I do wait for call Id to tell me who's calling before I decide to pick up. If it pops up during a pause and I answer it right then, well that can't be helped.

If they're waiting for the call its to make out they haven't really been sat on the edge of the seat staring at the phone all day!

Hello

I think that it is perhaps due to ettiquette which states you should answer the telephone after at least two rings.

Hope this helps xx

lol yeah some people do that, maybe its a subconcious thing of wanting to hear the a bit of the tune&only interrupt it where it wont sound silly ie where theres a pause not mid tune :)
