I have an 86 chevy S-10, 4 speed that wants to lock up and not roll easily I notice this only when the vehicle has been setting, the vehicle backs up fine. It only happens in first gear when I put it in first and go forward once it starts rolling its fine. I need some additional clues. Maybe the answer is right here and I am refusing to see it.

1.I have been told it can be the clutch, but it only does it in first gear. I have aslo been told thats unlikely

2. I been told it could be the rear end.

3. I been told it could be the transmission.

4.I been told that the emergency brake cable is too tight, and been told as a rule of thumb this is common with e brake problems because it is easier to back up than go forward. which may be since I replaced leaf springs on the vehicle.

5. I been told it could be a sticky wheel cylinder or the leg on the self adjusting brake mechanism is hanging up and wont allow the self adjuster to turn.

if i were you i would start looking at the easiest most likely problem starting with the brake line since you replaced the leaf springs i guess they are bigger or stand higher than the old ones then move on to the rear end ... the wheel cylinder ..the brake adjuster..clutch and pray its not your tranny

I think it is a brake problem.
Try this: Before taking off, put in reverse and back up few feet then WITHOUT TOUCHING THE BRAKES, put it in first gear and see. If it does not lock then inspect all your brakes not just the emergency one...Broken gears could have the same symptoms but I doubt it.
Good luck!

usually you can test the brake theory by starting off in second gear and some more gas, if it rolls easy then you rule out the brakes,, if not, then you adjusted the brakes too tight or got grease on the pads and they are locking up,

either way,, why not just pull the drums,, esp if the second gear thing doesnt work,

I tend to think that it may be brake related. The brake cable could be hanging up and not releasing the brake drum. Without looking at it, it is hard to tell, but that would be the first place that I would look.

Ck brake pads, sounds like your getting a little condensation rust in there, and once it breaks free it cleans off, happens when a car sets up, and humidity or salt air, or just from the heat then cooling down.

what you need to do is start checking anything that moves on it until you find it,id start with the brakes and go from there with it,there a lot of moving parts on it that could cause this, something like this could be hard to locate, but make a list, and start checking it off as you go,you will narrow it down a lot better doing it like this, good luck on it.
