16 is way too low and 40 is way too high.

On the track, I run 30psi up front and 32psi out back. On the street, perhaps a little less, say 28-29 up front and 30-31 out back. I'm on a 2002 R1 with Pirelli Diablos. These figures will vary some depending on the tires you are running. You can go as high as 33psi in front and 35psi out back, but that would be the upward limit (on the track). I wouldn't go any lower than 28psi as you will be reducing your traction (your sidewalls will deform more during cornering) as well as your gas mileage.

Also, I would check the website of your tire manufacturer... or you can even email them. They're the real experts, and I'm sure they'll be happy to give you a recommendation.

Most big bikes run at between 28 and 31psi.
I used to run all of mine at 29, because they got hot.

i believe it is 16psi .
