What is a brief summary of the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight?

At New Years feast at King Arthur's court, the Green Knight comes in and makes a challenge to a game. Whomever accepts the challenge will be allowed to strike the Green Knight with his own axe, on the condition that the challenger find him in exactly one year to receive a blow in return.
