My Dell laptop came with a special output dongle that plugs into what looks like an S-Video spot, then it has audio and video outputs with which to connect to a TV. You can also use the headphones jack to connect the sound with one that splits out to two channels.

Link out below goes to exactly what I have.

More than likely you will need one of two cables

first is the standard composite cables used for all typesof devices. You know them as the audio video cables , the red the white and the yellow for video(like hooking up a game system,)....the laptop may have a port like this whenre you would need to run the yello cable from the laptop to the TV 's video in port...

or you may have the Svideo cable this cable looks like a plain cable but it has ps2 type copnnectors on it...(like the mouse)

this would go from the laptop to the tv's SVideo input ....

in any case you may need to go to the display properties for your laptop to set up the display, you can use it as an extra monitor or a clone of the laptop screen...

I'm using VGA cable, it's good quality of picture and I can use my TV as a second monitor. Just remember that if it's longer than 5m you lose the quality!
See the picture of this cable here
