...I have no idea on which club to follow and what different leagues there are. I know there's the world cup and stuff, but what other leagues and tournaments should i follow to really be in the soccer mainstream? Any website or magazines?

Good for you :)

Don't listen to the first user, he's an idiot.

Try Fox Soccer Channel's website, they're good.

As for leagues, try watching different leagues and seeing which one you like best, and find the team that way (or research the teams online). Then check them out, that's a good way to get the feel for them.

As per leagues, here are the biggest leagues:

1 - EPL (English Premier League) - England. Teams ex: Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal
2 - La Liga - Spain. Teams ex: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Atletico Madrid
3 - Serie A - Italy. Teams ex: Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Lazio

and then there's other leagues like German'y's Bundesliga (ex: Bayern Munich), Portuguese Liga (ex: Sporting Lisbon), French Ligue 1 (ex: Lyon)..etc.etc.

The biggest tournaments include:

FIFA World Cup (where countries from around the world participates. It occurs every 4 years. Last it occured was last summer so in 2010 is the next one)

EURO CUP (where European countries participate. Every 4 years. Last was in 2004 so the next is next year)

COPA AMERICA (where South American countries participate. Last was this year)

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (where clubs participate. Every year)

If you want to watch EXCITING football I suggest EPL or La Liga. South American leagues aren't really interesting for me, personally, but maybe they'll be for you. the MLS (American league) is a good start if you want to be local.

The biggest leagues would be:
Premier League: English, Biggest Clubs: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United
La Liga: Spanish, Biggest Clubs: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia
Bundesliga: German, Biggest Clubs: Bayern Munich, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Werder Bremen
Serie A: Italian Biggest Clubs: Inter Milan, AC Milan, Roma, Fiorentina
Obviously its not limited to these clubs but these are the best. My favorite team is Manchester United

As for tournaments theres the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Euro Cup

For sites you can go to fifa.com or uefa.com, theres tons of sites you can go to, even ESPN has a page and Yahoo has a page for soccer

The English Premeir League is arguably one of the best leagues in the world, and i suggest you start there. if you like good passing and midfield play, thats the league for you. Top teams inclue Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle

Serie A in Italy typically has a strong league (lots on controversey surrounding it). Strong teams include AC Milan, Juventus, and Roma

La Liga is the Spanish League, home to Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona.

Other European leagues such as the French League, Portuguese League and Belgian League only have a handful of decent teams and are considered the weaker of the leagues in Europe.

Im not super knowledgable in South American Leagues, but if you like a spicier brannd of football I suggest the Argentina League. The battles between River Plate and Boca Juniors is bloody.

Hope that helps!

Just about each country has a league. I tend to follow a team or two from each just to keep it interesting: for example, in Brazil I follow Corinthians and Sao Paulo; in Mexico I follow Pumas and Atlas; in Spain I follow Madrid and Barcelona; there is also Galatasaray in Turkey, Grasshoppers in Switzerland; Inter in Italy; etc. How and why I picked these (and other teams) is kind of vague - did some checking on the leagues and picked teams in places I'd been or whose background was interesting - not really a scientific approach, but it is enjoyable.

Dude there are 4 leagues you should have a favorite team.

1. English Premier League
2. Spanish League
3. Italian League
4. The American MLS

And whatever nationality you are you should root for that team. (Unless they suck)

Support your local teams before you go out looking for a pro outside your area. Nothing beats going to a game. If you live in the USA (or Canada for that matter), go to www.mlsnet.com and check out the team that is closest to you.
