I look around at the celebrity divorce cases and it appals me that some of these women are so greedy. I fully agree with child support payments, but if the mother has a job, why should she get a chunk of money as well? Why can't she learn to budget? Is she really entitled to continue living a lavish lifestyle off of her ex's earnings?

Before anyone asks, I'm female. And I know this often happens in real-life divorce cases too- they just don't make the headlines as much.

waswis- absolutely right. It's not all one-sided by gender and I didn't mean to make it so in my question. It does seem though, as if women do this to men much more often than it happens the other way around.

They don't need alimony. Nobody does. The courts award it because they assume that the woman is an innocent victim in divorce cases and deserves some compensation until she decides to earn income herself.

It's an outdated concept that developed when men were the sole breadwinners and women stayed home all day. This also assumed that the woman had neither education nor job skills and had no means to provide for herself without a man. It's the same ancient rationale used to justify expecting a man to pay for everything on all dates and to "woo" a lady.

In modern times, that's not the case, and it shouldn't be encouraged by the courts. But this is why prenuptial agreements aren't really so bad, because **** happens.

The only women/men I've heard of who have gotten alimony in the last decade have been very very wealthy women/men, who didn't work, but held parties and events to support their spouse's career, or was a celebrity's wife/husband. If the woman/man was expected not to work to support their spouse's career, then I think they deserve to get something to live on, at least until they can educate themself enough to get a decent job, as well as medical coverage, like they would have if they had worked for a big company as well. And since they were actually "working" to support their spouse's career, I think they deserve something for retirement as well, like they would have been eligible for if they had worked for a wealthy corporation.

As far as celebrity husbands/wives, boy/girlfriends, I don't care who gets money or not. It should be fair, but who knows who actually worked or not? It would depend on how many years they'd been together, their educational level (if they needed support until they could get a job), their job they had before, during and after the marriage, etc. But those are so few people, I don't take it seriously.

I have heard of both men and woman asking wealthy partner's for money after a divorce or break-up, so it's not just women who are expecting money from their wealthy ex's.

I feel the same way as you do and I was a single mother. I wanted support for the baby and that's all I asked for although by law I was entitled to support for myself too. I don't get it either except if the woman gives up a "career" and then has to start back at a lower position because of lost time while she was married. That would make sense to me. To get support just because you married someone and made a mistake is wrong in my opinion.

Alimony can be awarded to men too. It is based on money percentages. Who makes more.
