What does the song mean?

I think it means when someone is feeling frustrated and depressed,and their faith is being tested.
But I don't think there is any particular meaning to it.Everyone has their own opinions on what the song means.

The term "losing my religion" is an old southern phrase meaning "at the end of my rope." The song is about an embarrassing situation where this guy finally admits his obsession/crush to somebody who didn't feel the same way. Now he's stuck in the room with her with this terrifying embarrassment. He thought she felt the same, but "that was just a dream" and now he just wants to crawl under a rock, "that's me in the corner, that's me in the spotlight, losing my religion." At least that's what I always thought the song meant. I may be wrong (;
