My daughter was the same way. She would nap a couple times a day but only for 20-30 minutes and be up at night every 3-4 hours, then one day it was 6 hours at night.
By the time she was 12-13 weeks old she was sleeping about 7-8 hours at night, though still only napping 20-30 mins at a time, 3-4 times a day.
She just turned 7 months old and sleeps about 12 hours at night, since she was maybe 5 months old.
Her nap habits are only somewhat better but since her nights are so good, I try not to complain.
Hang in there, it really DOES get better.

My 4 week old baby hardly ever takes any good nap during the day maybe 30 minutes here or there but she does pretty well at night, sleeps for 4 or five hours in a row at night.

Every baby is different when it comes to sleep habits. Several factors may help. Make sure your baby is comfortable. If the baby is dressed too warmly or not warm enough, this will deter the baby from being able to sleep. Remember, if it is warm for you, then it is also warm for the baby. If you feel that you need to wear a sweater, than your baby needs a blanket. My pediatrician told me that it is a common mistake for mother's to over dress their babies. If you are hot and need to be in shorts and a tank top, then it is safe to say that your baby will be more comfortable in just a diaper and t-shirt. If this is something you already do then
make sure the baby is changed often. Check his (or her) diaper on the average of (no less) than once an hour. Babies wet a lot! A soggy diaper will also keep the baby from sleeping comfortably. As far as waking during the night, babies this young often wake up every two or three hours because they are hungry and need to be fed. If the baby is waking too frequently, ask your doctor if you should feed the baby an extra ounce or two of formula (if bottle fed) or feed more frequently (if breast fed). One final question for you, do you run to the baby at the first little whimper? If so, then this may also be why the baby isn't sleeping well. Sometimes a baby will cry out in his or her sleep, but if left alone for a few minutes, will fall back to sleep again. If you are in the habit of running to your baby at the first whimper, then try waiting for a few minutes and see what happens. The pediatrician is the best scource to answer all your questions.

My daughter when she was 7 weeks old was still waking up at night every 3 hours or so, I think that's normal. She also would only take cat naps throughout the day, and even now at 6 1/2 months she'll take 3 or 4 cat naps throughout the day, every once in awhile she'll take a 2 hour nap. She now only wakes up once or twice during the night.

depends on how alert they are. Usually by 8 weeks the endless sleepiness of being a newborn winds down.
My son would go to bed at 830 pm, wake up at 10 to nurse, again at around 2 and then at 6, and sleep again until about 8 am.
Then around 9 am he'd take a short nap, about 40 minutes, then another longer nap around noon, usually for 2-3 hours.
That was from about 6 weeks to 3 months.
but each baby is different.
just make sure he has a routine that you keep, and that he gets enough sleep. Not enough sleep will make him stay awake and not sleep for long periods of time.
