First thing is we need to wait for the official investigation before running blindly in any direction.
New bridges are built with new education.
Annual inspections might be one answer.
I live 3 miles from the 35W bridge collapse and not too far from there near the U of M campus there is a rail road bridge with severely rusted through girders. There are actual holes rusted through the girders.

The federal government provides 80 percent of the money for construction, repair and maintenance of the so-called federal-aid highway system including Interstate highways and bridges.Remember this, before any inspections are done or safety measures taken, people must die in our country first. Then and only then will the government respond. I still feel safe in the USA, but it's ridiculous that these stupid things have to happen. It's terrible. I feel horrible for those people and their families. What must be done? Well first off more inspections and action to fix the problems. So what if it inconveniences people, at least they won't die from driving on a bridge. People need to start listening to the engineeers!

I have been afraid of bridges and now my fear is even greater. I was always convinced bridges were going to fall when I was driving over them and my parents and friends told me I was crazy. I feel safe in the US because one bridge collapse doesn't compromise national security. They need to build super bridges.

OK let me tell you. Feeling safe is the problem with America. If you want to feel safe, please stay at home because there is a dangerous world out there and there is no way possible to make it safe for everybody. If by chance you need to go out of your home make sure you are ready for the possibility of not coming back. Pray to God or do whatever but one thing is for sure, you have a chance of dieing somehow, even by staying home but oh well.

Yep....I do....cause I live in West Texas and there are no bridges, no skyscrapers, no earthquakes, no tornados, no hurricanes, no major airports, and pretty much nothing of interest to any one!! So yeah I feel pretty safe here.......the only thing major that happens around here is if someone breaks wind!!

I live about 1/2 mile from that bridge and typically drive over it 4+ times a day. I have to say, it never felt unstable to me and my first suspicion was terrorism. Apparently this is not so...

I feel for those who lost loved one. Yes, I still feel safe in the USA. Problems of structural integrity shouldn't be ignored.
