How many times have you read the Dark Tower series by Stephen King? I have only read the first book. Is the whole series as good and does it form a cohesive unit?

While there are Stephen King novels which tie into his Dark Tower series, you really don't need to read them before or in order. Dark Tower stands on it's own, and many of the tales that tie into it were written before or during its creation. For example, The Stand. You've probably read it, but don't need to have read it...it just adds an extra layer of understanding. One thing I might suggest however, is Marvel's Dark Tower comics. The first collection called 'The Gunslinger Born' adapts material from 'Wizard and Glass', the fourth book in the series. The rest of the Marvel series is based on bits mentioned or alluded to in Dark Tower, but never fully fleshed out. With King's cooperation, this series tells of the fall of Gilead and how Roland came to be chasing the Man in Black at the start of 'The Gunslinger'.

I have read it once except for the first 2 books I had read twice because of the time in between. I enjoy the stories quite a bit.

One of the things I enjoyed especially starting with Wizards and Glass is how King tied in some characters from his other novels.

Besides a couple books here and there, these are the only books I have really read of King's.

I actually read the first 4 books a few times waiting for him to finish the rest. I got a copy of The Gunslinger in the 70's and waited years in between the rest of the novels having to reread the prior novels to remember the story. It wasn't until a few years ago that ALL of the book were released together. Donald M Grant Publishers published the original books. Its an excellent fantasy. Stick with it, it gets much better and it does form a cohesive story.

I've read the whole series only once and I highly recommend it. The 4th one, Wizards and Glass is a little tough for a lot of people to get through, but it's a much better book after you're looking back on it. I plan on reading them again when I have time, you should definately read the series.

I have read up to Wizard and Glass. They were good, but I got tired of them. I should get back into them and finish the series. I would probably get them in audio format and that way I can refer back to the earlier books to refresh my memory since it had been years since I last read the DT series.

ive read the entire series , and IMHO it doesnt really stack up after that wizards and glass book. it just kinda flounders around trying to tie up loose ends. you can kinda tell that SK ran out of ideas when he had them wander through a few of his other books. (to say more would be spoilers)
