The value that he can spend = his net earnings - what he spends:
V= 1240 - 150 - 244 - 300 - 50 = 1240 - 744 = 496

Since you need the percent though, you need to find out how much of his earnings this sum represents, so you just divide the two and multiply it by 100, so as to get the percent.

P=(496/1240)*100=0.4*100 = 40%

The total amount of money that he spends is:
=150 + 244 + 300 + 50
= 744
So the amount left with him is:
= 1240 - 744
= 496
as a percent, that would be
= 496/1240 x 100
= 40%

1240 - 150-244-300-50 = $496 left
496/1240 = .4 = 40%

first find the total that he spends
150+244+300+50= 744
so he has 1240-744 = 496 to spend on other things

(496*100)/1240 = the percentage he can spend on other things

($1,240 - [$150 + $244 + $300 + $50]) / ($1,240)
($1,240 - $744) / $1,240
$496 / $1,240
0.4 or 40 %
