Standardizing the charging points would make it easier for all cell phone users to obtain a charging cable especially in an emergency. If you are at a friends home and your cell phone battery is discharging, you can have one readliy available. Makes sense? Thanks.

'cause they want to make money. when you make a phone, they want you to only use their charger, not some generic brand.

Several Reasons:

1) No company can copy another company's patent - that's illegal. If Company A patents their charging technology, Company B has to pay Company A to use it, or invent their own. "Standards" could be established, but each company would want THEIR "standard" adopted because they spent so much time and effort developing and marketing it.

2) Technology changes. What is a good idea for charging one type of battery is NOT necessarily a good idea for charging another type of battery. If Company A's battery technology advances quickly, but using old chargers (or Company B's chargers ) causes the battery to die - or worse, explode - that's bad!

3) Money. This has been mentioned, but it does go into the mix. Why should I have to compete between other companies for chargers. You bought my phone, it came with a charger - what's your problem?

What you perceive as a "convenience" isn't always economical.

it makes sense, but u also have to look at it from a buisness side too.. each phone manufacturer has a different way to make their phones, not all phones will be able to charge with a usb charger, just because of construction. also it would cost tons of money to standardize something like that. it's just not worth the money. and on top of all of that, they know by having different chargers, it makes the consumer have to go and buy new chargers everytime they get a new phone! :)

Because if they did that, then they couldn't make money off people buying different kinds of chargers.

Sure it makes sense for the consumer, but not the business.

They force you to buy THEIR charger, and therefore make more money.

It all about the money. If it was universal then you wouldn't buy theirs.
