Wikipedia definition:
The term "dude" is an English slang word used to informally address a male person. The word may also be used in the same manner for a female. In informal speech, many young people use the word "dude" freely. "Dude" may also be used alone in a sentence, serving as an exclamation; denoting a feeling of surprise, happiness, disappointment, amazement or anger, among other emotions. The word might also be used practically anywhere in a sentence in order to convey such sentiments in conversation.
Other, older definitions of dude exist; a particularly well-dressed male or one who is unfamiliar with life outside a large city. These definitions may go hand-in-hand, hence the phrased definition "An Easterner in the West" (U.S.)

As it has been used recently, it is a colloquial term for a male person, like calling someone "guy" or "chap". Some people have broadened it to be a friendly term for everyone - I had a student slip up and call me "dude" last year, even though I'm a female professor in her 50s (to her credit, she was embarrassed about it!). The other meaning I know of is that there is such a thing as a "dude ranch", which is a ranch for amateurs to get the experience of being a rancher or cowboy. In that sense, it means inexperienced or amateur.

Its surfer slang for man
"Dudette" is the surfer slang for woman.
Even though many people mess these words up when they are talking to a man or woman.
Most people don't use dudette as much as they dude

"man" or "one"
It is a slang expression, originally had to be male to be a dude, now it is applied to both genders.
In American South "y'all" would be similar.
Or in New Jersey "youse guys" would be similar.
If you say to someone "Dude!" you are trying to get their attention in a familiar way, like "Amigo" in Spanish.
Example, "Dude, let's get out of here." = "Friend, let's leave together."
"All these dudes were in my face." = "Many people were upset about it."
