It's my father's car. He uses an independent garage for repairs and they can't pin-point the problem. As it's an old car ( 1994 ) he can't justify throwing un-limited money at the problem - just wondered whether any one else might have had similar experience. Motorway driving is fine - lower speed on less even surfaces = knocking noise. Any ideas appreciated ( ideally from experience ) thanks.

have the brake pads been changed recently? i ask this as a friend done mine and left the clips that go on the top and bottom of the cradle off, although not dangerous it meant i got a rattle when i went over uneven surfaces.
other than that i would look at the down link arm or anti roll bar bushes.

Ball joints when worn and loose sound exactly like this. I'd have all the front suspension pieces checked. Tierod ends shock "mounts" cross link and idler arm.

i would investigate, at an estimated guess without looking at it, i would say one of two things, wishbone/spring bushes, or steering ball joints, investigate by rocking the steering.
