Are you certain it's gold plated and not gold leaf? Gold plate can be replated by a jeweler or done yourself, if you want to invest in the equipment. If it's gold leaf you can do it yourself by buying the gold leaf on line and follow some simple instructions.

If it is not too big a piece, you can have a jeweler replate it. Otherwise I think you are stuck with painting or replacement.
