It is an AWESOME series, but a very slow read. If you chewed through the HP series pretty quick you might be alright but if it took you over a week per book on the last 4 you might not want to try LOTR just yet. The first couple tries I abandoned it because it was soooo slow going. I ultimately came back and enjoyed it much more after I had a few more fantasy series under my belt. If you are intimidated by it, and are looking for alternatives, I would suggest either the Eragon series or the Game of Thrones series. Neither are complete but both should be wrapped up in the next couple years.

About 12, I think... Ive lost count XD
I read LOTR before The Hobbit... this is how it happened. I randomly found the Fellowship and thought,. "Hmmm. looks interesting". I was half-way through it when I saw the first movie... and I read all three books about three times before The Two Towers even came out in theaters XD Then I read the Hobbit, and loved it... I've read it about five times.. then the Simlarillion 3 times, and I started on Unfinished Tales but have yet to finish that.
Tolkien Rocks! :D

Well I first read it in 1st grade, I was considered a "gifted" student when it came to reading, not much else though, and then every year after that untill about 6th grade, twice in highschool twice in college once in grad school & twice when the movies came out. So eleven times. What a dork huh? I don't even like fantasy but I loved these books. Oh, and I've read the Silmarillion 9 times that is my favorite Tolkien work. Also I did read the hobbit first, in kindergarten, (no joke) but I don't read it every time I read LOTR, I've probably only read the Hobbit 8 times. god this sounds dorky..

I've read the Hobbitt and the Lord of the Rings several times since I was a teenager. I supect I'll read them again before I die. The Hobbitt sets the stage for the LOTR story.
