I bought my laptop bout 2 years ago and had no problems up until 2 weeks ago, admittedly i would be quite lazy and leave it on for up to 6 -7 hours a day but thought this was ok, as it would just hibernate after a while anyway

but now after pretty much 40 minutes everytime it turns itself off! it doesnt even warn me.
i've done an AVG virus scan and the same with Windows defender but they found nothing and even used 'Symanntec worm fix tool' to see if that helped, but it said my laptop was fine.

i've heard bout overheating? shall i take the back off my laptop and clean it with some 'canned oxygen?' ive managed to get a sneaky look at the fan in my computer but it doesnt look very dusty?

shall i just give in and go and to PC world and let them rip me off to fix it??

please help

If it's rebooting rougly every 40 minutes it is most likely as you thought, a heat problem. The heatsink may have come loose, you'd be surprised at how the slightest bit of presure released from the heatsink can over heat the system. If you feel comfortable checking the heatsink / fan for your CPU then do it yourself, but I'm not intirely sure the fan you are looking at is the heatsinks fan. Most (but deffinately not all) laptops don't let you easily access the heatsink / fan, in comparison to say the RAM or wireless card. I highly doubt it is a virus or any sort of spyware, I would only take it to a PC Shop if you don't feel comfortable taking the laptop apart and checking that there is a good pressure from the heatsink to the processor and the fans are clean.

what are your running at time when it shuts down. I used to have that problem but it was when I was using IE 6 and using the windows java. If you are using Internet explorer 6 and still using there java I would say try downloading sun java (if you don't already have it) Then in Internet options go to advance and check the sun java box (may need to restart browser)

if your laptop is overheating (which is another problem I have had) it would be best to buy a cooling board. walmart has one for around 30 dollars but it raises the laptop up to let air get it. The best one that you should buy has fans that will suck the heat away from your computer. The one that i have is plastic that folds and has holes on the bottom but also serves as a lap board.

Being a programmer I can tell you that it would require an extremely powerful virus to just shut off you computer. Windows has things to stop that. If it was a virus it would use one of windows shut down procedures and exploit it. This sounds like hardware and if it turns on then it's gotta be heat. Keep in mind that even if it doesn't feel hot that it's only the heat of the chip that matters. If the chip gets to hot it will shut down to prevent damage it will also not warn you because that could be dangerous if you wait to long to read. My suggestion is get some diagnostic tools that will let you check the temperature of your cpu (your computer knows it and I'm sure there are programs that will let you check). You could also trying setting up desktop fan to blow into it and see if it lasts longer. My diagnosis? Your fans are burnt you're going to need to have them replaced.

I have a laptop that does something similar, however mine is more of a system crash (related to Windows) rather than complete shutdown. I'd make sure the fans are properly working to prevent overheating and perhaps look at the tech support site for your laptop.

Good luck!

First buy a cooling pad with fans, sound like over heating, I use one on all our lap tops and it helps.
Second you may be having hard drive problem, on one of mine it started doing same thing and then crashed, would recommend copy and save all important files etc. just in case.
You can go to Fry's Electronic if you have one in your area and they will check and advise for free at computer service, also they will tell and show you how to install new hard drive, its easy. You will need original recovery CD's, or you can get from your computer manufacturer.
Hope this helps

Because your laptop has been infected with a virus and you need a good anti-virus like kapersky to delete it or make another installation of windows.

You might want to replace the fan. Althought it doesn't look dusty, it might not work fully. (ie. slow spining).

i don't think it's worth it to ask PC world to repair it for you as you know they will over charge you.
