Drass, a tiny town in the Kargil District of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The town, reportedly the second coldest inhabited town in the world.
It has become famous as the second coldest inhabited place in the world by virtue of the intense cold that descends upon the valley along with repeated snowfalls during winters. Winter temperature is sometimes known to plummet to less than -40 degrees. The Drass valley starts from the base of the Zojila pass, the Himalayan gateway to Ladakh.
Village of Oymyakon in eastern Siberia, Russia, is the coldest place. Named the world's coldest inhabited village by Guinness World Records, Oymyakon is known as one of the candidates for the Northern Pole of Cold, because on January 26, 1926, a temperature of â71.2 °C (â96.2 °F) was recorded there (however, this fact is arguable because the temperature was not directly measured but obtained by extrapolation).
