Just look at the government control over Buddhism in China.

Could the recent efforts in Congress to redefine the meaning of what lobbying means lead to churches having their speech and actions controlled through the courts (and therefore effectively suppressed, at least in part)?

I think that is you spend some time on the ACLU web site and read their positions on churches you will see that they do NOT support government control of churches.
