my 2 cents first.
a drink and a smoke goes together like tea and cake for a lot of people and why not after a long day (or week) toil at work or at home we all need to unwind. it bemuses me no end when health conscious minded people get worry about smoke in a area where drink is sold, considering that drink can an does lead to violent situations and that can be far more dangerous to you health than smoke. of course we could ban drink aswell follow up by a 9 o clock curfew.

in ireland when the ban came a few pubs had the sense to erect smoking areas in the back yards rather than having people standing outside in the rain. those pubs that didn't erect smoking areas lost custom fairly rapidly and were not long in erecting smoking areas to accomodate there clients.

within months of the ban, smokers banned (pardon the pun) together in groups where strangers became friends and started to stay outside for longer. there non smoking partners and friends started to go outside aswell rather than being left on there own for long periods of time. so its now gone to the stage where the once pack pub is now relatively quiet and the smoking sheds, areas or yards are pack out with smokers and non smokers alike gossiping away as one does in a pub. or do the the hard liners non smokers not gossip in pubs but sit there on there own in smouldering contemp drinking bloody mary's without volka and miming there next round to the barperson while praising themselves for not being susceptible to peer pressure by not socialising with them other lesser beings.

the fact is a lot of pubs in ireland were badly effected by the ban and not many totally recover. at first the ban seem to be cutting down the number of smokers but that change back after a few months once the hype was over. but now the overall number of smokers in ireland is still rising. they just smoke more at home. the same will happen in britain.

They discuss the meaning of life and lament the good old days when people were allowed to get on with their lives.

I was in a pub yesterday and two women were going on about a man who had just come back in from outside after having had a smoke. 'Disgusting habit' etc. The anti smoking mob have had their day. Why can't they just accept that this guy does smoke - not in their space - and get on with their lives.

How much the people inside and the idiots who made up the ban sound like Hitler when it comes to forcing their personal way of life.

July 1st was such a great day. Even better, was the fact that July was the rainiest month this year (so far)! I think that was God's way of telling smokers to quit!!
