How long would I have from the time that my hard drive starts making clicking noises and the like to the time that it fails? This isn't happening, but I just need to know. My computer and all it's hardware is over 5 years old and something is bound to give out eventually. Would I have long enough to run SyncBack (which would copy everything except the Windows folder to my external drive)?

You should have enough time to back up your drive. I can't honestly guess how much time it takes for a drive to die from when it starts making noise, because I've only ever had one die on me. It took about a month.

No, Hardisk would not fails as immediately as we do mistaken close down. The life of an complicated disk relies upon at using it. If we use it for twenty-4 hours by using way of out the three hundred and sixty 5 days the metallic plates indoors the complicated disk will start to worn up and then we are able to pay interest a noise like a rat scribbling! this means that your complicated disk may well be failed after some MONTHS!!

It all depends. It can fail almost immediately or it can take months. I have a hard drive that has been failing for almost a year but it's still running.
Best thing to do is back up your data immediately and get a new hard drive.

It depends. I've had quality problems with WD, while other brands keep going and going.

If it starts to click, mirror it to another hard drive as soon as possible. You should have time to back it up.

You might start backing up regularly if you value your data, setup, etc.

I'd mirror the whole thing and just boot from the new drive if I were you.

Don't wait till the drive crashes to back up. Back up your data now! AND keep backing it periodically, once a week, once a month---depending on how often your data changes and how important it is to you.

Why have an external drive if you're not going to back up your data on a regular basis? Get rid of it and buy yourself a limb to climb out on.

If it has been used "normally" then I'd say after or around 5 years.
