The other day I side-swiped a mailbox and it broke the passenger side mirror cleanly off the car (2000 Chevy Cavalier). It left a spring about a foot long dangling off the car, which I assume was what anchored the mirror to the car.

Everything on the mirror is fine-luckily it didn't break the glass or anything.

How can I re-attach the spring inside the mirror and then put it back on the car?

Can not repair - Remove the door panel & unbolt the mirror. Take it to your local auto wrecker & remove one from a wrecked vehicle.

you cannot-you will need to replace the whole assembly-you will have to remove the cover on the inside of the door and it will be attatched by three 10mm nuts-you may also have to remove the door panel-there are aftermarket sources for outside mirrors now-one company is called TYC.
