I guess if you are asking this question you need to know why the answer is three. The best way to do this is to take the number that you know and subtract it from the total. In this case you have the number 3 and the total is 9. Subtract 3 from 9 and you have 6. So now ask yourself what times two will give you six. 2 x 3=6 . Hope this helps.

2x + 3 =9
subtract 3 from both sides
2x = 6
divide both sides by 2
x = 6/2
simplify
x = 3

2x+3=9
subtracting 3 from both sides we get,
2x+3 - 3= 9 - 3
so, 2x = 6
now dividing both sides by 2 we get,
2x/2 = 6/2
hence x=3
