Solid food absolutely changes the BM, he seems a BIT young for rice cereal-I waited until 5-6 months. If he didn't seem to suffer while getting it out, I wouldn't worry about it. If he did, or does in the next few days, quit the cereal and call the boy's doctor....

I would suggest adding just a little bit of prunes mixed in with the cereal or some prune juice to substitute for some of the water when you mix it in. I always used Gerbers apple prune juice cause it tasted better. Don't add a lot or you will be changing diapers every couple minutes. Also if you don't want to use prunes you can use the jarred apples or bananas (they don't work quite as well). Don't worry it happened to my son when I started him on cereal and he was a bit younger than your son. Some people may tell you that he is too young but I learned one thing, You are his parent and you know what is best they don't live with him. Like in my case I started cereal because he was eating an 8 oz bottle every hour and still wanted more. My son turned out fine. Good luck and I hope this helps a little bit.

Yes, it does seem a little early for the cereal, but I have several friends who swear it helped their babies sleep through the night, whatever works for you!

I would try a combination of two things to help loosen up the bowels. Cut back on the amount of cereal (at this young age, a teaspoon or two mixed with plenty of formula, breastmilk, or water once a day is plenty) and increase the amount of fluids. Water is best, you definitely don't want to introduce juice at this age! Make sure you ask your doctor before giving anything like Pedialite or Karo syrup.

Just wait...you will be amazed at the poops you will see over the next couple of years. I'll never forget the first time that my daughter drank a blue juice and her poop was GREEN!

Don't give him rice cereal yet. They shouldn't be started on solid foods until 4-6 months. Babies this young should only be getting formula/breastmilk. Their little tummies can't digest this very well, not to mention he is probably getting dehytraded/constipated.

If you are using formula, add a little bit more water. But definitly take the rice cereal out of his diet for now. They get all the nutrients they need in formula and breastmilk. Just make sure he is getting plenty of liquids.

Only two things :

1) He seems to be constipated as hard stools are a sign of that.

2) He does seem very young to start cereals - we have a 4 month old and just went to the doctor to check and he indicated ( consistent with parenting books we read) that should start around 6 mths

My daughter is 5 months old and we just started cereal so we are having the same problem. The one thing that seems to work is apple juice. She gets 1 oz of the Gerber baby apple juice and 3 oz of water mixed in a bottle and she normally has a BM about 2 hours after she drinks her juice. Also if he is on formula give a bottle of water mid day, still give him his regular milk but water should also help. Good Luck :)

Add just a bit of juice to the meal. It will help "balance" the very hard stools cereal gives them....

My kids had to be put on cereal at 2 weeks due to a reflux issue.

Instead of loading them up with meds a few docs wanted to do....adding cereal to the mix was the best option. 2 out of 3 kids had that issue. My 3rd, well, he was just too hungry and would eat and eat and eat...cereal fixed that issue...he was a bit older than the girls were when he got started on cereal....

But I had to add the juice to the meal, just a bit...a few sips was all they needed to regulate the cereal....

He is probably to young to be able to digest the cereal, therefore it sits hard in his belly then intestines, then he poops it out.

May I suggest you stop the cereal, unless the doctor has prescribed it, and wait until at least 5 months, but 6 months is better.

Sweet Pea it is too early for the cereal rice take him off of it asap because his digestive system is not ready for it at all. I know most parents do this because the infant drinks alot of milk but it's really hard on his tummy right now. If you take him off that his bowels will be normal again. Good luck and God bless!

Yes his poop will get harder when you start to feed him solids. Is there are reason you are at such a young age? Most docs say 4months old minimum and the best age is 6 months old. If he starts to act like his tummy his hurting take him to the doctor. When they are this little it is hard for their little tummies to digest anything but breastmilk/formula
